Governor Hochul today signed legislation to eliminate violent crime against police officers. The legislation (S.772A/A.6318B) would create a Blue Alert system to assist in the identification, location, and arrest of persons suspected of killing or seriously injuring a police officer. By creating a better way to disseminate information to the public about violent crimes against law enforcement, this new law will help catch criminals and improve public safety throughout the state.
“We are taking a comprehensive approach to protecting the people who serve and protect us, taking every step we can to combat violent crimes against law enforcement,” he said. Governor Hochul said. “New York is fully committed to protecting our brothers and sisters in law enforcement and this new law will be critical in creating safer communities and bringing those who commit violent crimes to police.”
Legislation (S.772A/A.6318B) establishes the Blue Alert system to assist in the identification, location, and apprehension of persons suspected of killing or seriously injuring a police officer. Blue Alerts are issued to alert law enforcement, the media, and the public about people suspected of killing, seriously injuring, or threatening police. Creating a Blue Alert program will help catch criminals who threaten public safety by establishing a better way to disseminate information about police crime to the public.
New York State Police Acting Superintendent Steven A. Nigrelli said, “The police are known for doing dangerous work. However, officers chose this job because they believe in serving the public, helping others and putting the public before themselves. Every call to duty brings its own challenges and officers never know the truth. What they will face. By starting the Blue Alert program, we can prevent at least law enforcement from people who want to harm police officers who are dedicated to protecting others.”
Assemblyman Steve Stern said, “I was proud to support and pass this important law in support of the brave men and women of law enforcement, who sacrifice so much to keep us all safe. The Blue Alert System has a track record of success across the country and its implementation. This law will protect our communities, protect our officers, and save lives . I thank my colleagues in the Legislature for co-sponsoring this legislative project and Governor Hochul for signing it into law.”
