Godrej sees synergy in the chemical industry | Jobs Recent

MUMBAI : The Godrej Group has formed a council to explore synergies, increase production and review opportunities for its chemical business across group companies, Nadir Godrej, Chairman, Godrej Industries Ltd., said in an interview.

“We are working on all possible options. I doubt we will have full mergers, but we may switch companies from one to the other to get the right balance. And we will certainly develop synergies across all our chemical businesses,” Godrej said.

For example, Godrej Industries deals in oleochemicals (chemicals derived from vegetable and animal oils), while group company Godrej Agrovet has a plant protection chemicals business. Astec Life Sciences, a unit of Godrej Agrovet, is a contract developer and manufacturer of chemicals.

The council’s mandate also includes evaluating research and development opportunities for chemical activity.

“We just started the world for chemicals. It’s not something very formal because it’s just started. And I would like to mention that we similarly have a production council, which is like a coordination group,” he added.

Chemicals is one of the oldest businesses for the 125-year-old Godrej Group, one of the world’s leading producers of oleochemicals, producing and selling more than 100 chemicals, including fatty alcohols, fatty acids, surfactants and glycerin, in 80 countries. They are used as raw materials in the consumer, pharmaceutical and food industries.

Godrej Agrovet owns more than 62% of Astec Lifesciences, a producer of agrochemical agents and pharmaceutical intermediates.

“We are also trying to figure out how Godrej’s crop protection business Agrovet and Astec can work better, but they are very different companies,” Godrej said.

Astec is also launching a new research and development center.

“They were experts in triazoles, but they are looking at other chemical platforms, fluorine, chemicals, sulfonylureas. And the combination of all these platforms will greatly increase the agrochemical scope, while opening fields for the application of these platforms and other chemicals, including pharmaceutical intermediates. And this is one of the things that the Chemicals Council has already discussed,” explained the full scope of the Council.
