Visakhapatnam-based start-up Virya Paramita Energy (VPE) has signed a cooperation agreement with IIT-Madras and has made a real breakthrough in the renewable energy sector thanks to the way it generates electricity from sea waves.
The team created a device called the “Ocean Wave Energy Converter” or Sindhuja-1 to generate energy from the waves.

According to the IIT-M press release: “The system consists of a floating buoy, a spar and an electrical module. The buoy moves up and down as the wave moves up and down. In the current design, a balloon-like system called a buoy has a central hole through which a long rod called a spar passes. The tree can be attached to the seabed and will not be affected by passing waves while the buoy moves up and down causing relative motion between them. Relative motion causes the electric generator to rotate to produce power. In the current design, the spar floats and the mooring chain holds the system in place.”

This device is designed for isolated coastal areas that require reliable electrical power and communications – either by supplying power to loads built directly into or on the device, or by supplying power to nearby loads, such as on the seabed and in the water column .

Target stakeholders include oil and gas companies, defense and security institutions and communications sectors.

In November 2022, the team deployed the device six kilometers off the coast of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu and placed it at a depth of 20 meters.

“Following the positive results of our maiden trials, we have set a goal of producing one MW of commercial wave electricity by 2025,” said Karthik, founder of VPE. The Hindu.

They receive help from the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in Chennai.

According to team leader Professor Samad, “The sea is rough. There are forces such as tides, waves, wind, tsunamis, cyclones, etc. Seawater is corrosive and marine algae growth on a machine component is a problem. . Divers and other specialized personnel are needed for the installation. Deploying and keeping this gadget in the water is very difficult. Therefore, when designing any system, we must take all these elements into account. Ultimately, the whole job becomes costly.”

Ocean waves can generate energy 24/7 with minimal battery storage. It is ideal for marine surveillance, offshore desalination plants, drone charging, underwater vehicle charging, weather buoys, military vessels, ports, and oil and gas operations.
