HOUSTON – A man who caused a multi-vehicle crash that killed a mother and her three children in March 2021 was sentenced to four life terms in prison Monday, according to Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg.
“We see more deaths from drunk driving between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than any other month of the year,” Ogg said. “This heartbreaking case shows how one person’s carelessness and bad decisions can result in the deaths of many innocent people, including children.”
Daniel Canada, 37, was sentenced to four life terms in prison by District Judge Colleen Gaido after he was convicted last week of four counts of intoxication manslaughter in a three-week trial. Life sentences expire at the same time.
A 7 vehicle accident occurred on March 14, 2021, at 8:20 pm at FM 2920 and Gosling Road.
According to prosecutors, the Canadian car, traveling at 100 miles per hour, hit the car of 28-year-old Porsha Branch. Her sedan burst into flames, killing her and her three sons: seven-month-old Drake, two-year-old Messiah, and five-year-old King.
Canada survived the crash with minor injuries.
His blood alcohol level was 0.15, almost twice the legal limit, and his blood test also showed marijuana and Xanax, according to prosecutors.
Assistant District Attorney Lynn Nguyen, who prosecuted ADA Erandy Marquez, said the verdict shows that the people of Harris County are tired of drunk driving deaths and will hold the accused accountable.
“Daniel Canada robbed three young children of the opportunity to grow into the people they could have been,” Nguyen said. “He robbed the mother of her life, the father of her whole family, and the society of a beautiful group of people, and he did all this for selfishness.”
