12 men were arrested after an investigation revealed internet crimes against children in the Lowcountry | Jobs Recent

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) – State and local agencies have arrested more than a dozen men since August for online crimes against children in the Mount Pleasant area.

Various offenses include soliciting sex from a minor, attempted sexual exploitation of a minor and sharing graphic content with minors.

Fifteen agencies have done this work, and Mount Pleasant has been working as a base for detectives and police to find evidence and arrest and charge the suspects. Each charge can carry a prison sentence and be added to the national sex offender database.

Those charged will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office and its Internet Crimes Against Children division.

Kenneth Clark is an officer with the Mount Pleasant Police Department who worked many hours investigating this operation.

“It means a lot to us. Our mission is to save children and I think you can tell by our hard work that we are saving a lot of children. I know myself as a parent, my daughter is grown now, but when I started this way back when she was young, it means a lot to make sure that other children stay safe with the work we do,” said Clark.

Kevin Atkins, Commander of the South Carolina Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, says it was a great collaboration. He goes on to say that parents can also help by monitoring their children’s devices and teaching them safe online practices, such as not accepting stalking, friend requests or messages from strangers.

“It’s hard work, it takes a long time to produce one case. You can put 20 hours into one of these cases and it doesn’t happen. A lot depends on what the bad guy does. They can go on for weeks. It’s whatever it takes. I mean a lot of this – we plan these years in advance… for a real interview-type investigation, it could take 30 minutes, or it could take six months,” Atkins said.
